HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Land Purchase Offers for U.S. Hwy. 30/So. Dakota Avenue Interchange RESOLUTION NO.00-551 RESOLUTION APPROVING OFFERS FOR LAND PURCHASES FOR U. S.HIGHWAY 30/SOUTH DAKOTA AVENUE INTERCHANGE FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS, over the past several years, staff has been working to develop a project to construct an interchange on U. S. #30 at the intersection of South Dakota Avenue; and, WHEREAS,the interchange will provide more direct access to the west side of the community,and thus, reduce the east/west trips on the existing streets in the area(primarily Lincoln Way); and, WHEREAS,many public meetings were held on the project to determine the appropriate layout,and in March, 2000, a final public hearing was held on the design; and, WHEREAS, the layout was approved at the public hearing and staff was directed to proceed with appraisals and right-of-way acquisitions; and, WHEREAS,in Fall 2000,the City Council approved the purchase of the right-of-way from the property owners on the north side of the proposed Interchange for a total amount of$1,653,200; and, WHEREAS,since that time, staff has been working with Doug and Wanda McCay,who own property on the southwest quadrant of the proposed Interchange,to reach an acceptable purchase price; and, WHEREAS,the only other property involved is a small(0.75 acre)parcel on the southeast quadrant of the Interchange owned by the ISU Foundation that has an appraised value of$6,900/acre; and, WHEREAS,based on the McCay proposal,they have indicated that they feel that the City would have to institute eminent domain proceedings in an attempt to pay a lower price than$500,000; and, WHEREAS,any funding shortfall would be allocated from the savings on the Dayton Avenue project and would be detailed in the next budget amendment. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that staff is hereby directed to offer$5,175 to the ISU Foundation and$500,000 to the McCays for their respective parcels.
