RESOLUTION APPROVING THE GRADUATE RESEARCH
PROPOSAL OF NITRIFYING TRICKLING FILTERS AT
AMES WATER AND POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,in 1986,the original design for the major biological treatment component, the nitrifying trickling
filters, was developed for the Water and Pollution Control(WPC)Plant using research from a pilot study funded by
the City through the Iowa State University Civil Engineering Department; and,
WHEREAS,that research resulted in construction cost savings to the City of more than$1 million; and,
WHEREAS, since the Plant has been placed in operation, there has not been a single occurrence when the
design discharge conditions have been violated; and,
WHEREAS, the City is currently waiting for a new discharge permit from either the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources or U. S.EPA; and,
WHEREAS,it is anticipated that new discharge limits even more stringent than the current design will likely
be imposed; and,
WHEREAS,it is imperative that the City evaluate the full-scale operation of the innovative nitrifying trickling
filters to determine how closely actual operations are to the original research projections;and,
WHEREAS,that information will be invaluable to our ability to assess what new facilities must be added in
order to meet the projected future discharge requirements; and,
WHEREAS,Dr.Timothy Ellis,an assistant professor of Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University,
has proposed an 18-month graduate research study to evaluate the capacity of nitrifying trickling filters; and,
WHEREAS,ISU has requested City participation in the amount of$24,150.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the graduate
research proposal submitted by Dr.Timothy Ellis at a cost of$24,150 is hereby approved and funding is authorized
