RESOLUTION APPROVING IOWA CLEAN AIR ATTAINMENT
PROGRAM GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE
DAYTON AVENUE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,the Dayton Avenue Improvement Project,which is included in the 2000/01 Capital
Improvement Plan,consists of reconstructing Dayton Avenue from a two-lane to a three-lane street from
Lincoln Way to East 13th Street as well as constructing a viaduct across the Union Pacific Railroad's main
line; and,
WHEREAS, the reconstruction of Dayton Avenue is programmed due to the deteriorating
pavement condition and the need to provide additionl lane widths to accommodate higher traffic volumes;
and,
WHEREAS,the viaduct has been included as part of this project due to excessive motorist delays
and the high accident exposure at this existing at-grade crossing; and,
WHEREAS, staff has retained the firm of Snyder and Associates to perform the initial study for
the Dayton Avenue Reconstruction and Viaduct Project, which has consisted of completing the public
involvement process, preliminary plan, and the application for this Congestion Mitigation/Air Quality
(CMAQ)funding grant; and,
WHEREAS, for this funding request, it is believed that a$1,000,000 grant application should be
submitted since it is consistent with other past application requests that have been approved for similar
projects within the state; and,
WHEREAS, staff believes that this request has funding potential due to the nature of the project
and the associated high vehicle emission reduction factors.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the
Iowa Clean Air Attainment Program grant application for the Dayton Avenue Improvement Project is
hereby approved.
