RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGE TO THE
NATURAL RESOURCES SECTION OF THE
LAND USE POLICY PLAN (LUPP)
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS,with the recent completion of the Stormwater Management Plan for the Hallett's Quarry
Watershed,it has become apparent that the LUPP does not adequately recognize the importance of managing
stormwater on a watershed level as a means to protect water resources; and,
WHEREAS, with respect to water resources, such as the Special Resource of Hallett's Quarry or
wetlands, the inclusion of these water resources in an open space or the acquisition of the water resource does
not provide protection from degradation that would occur from improperly managed stormwater runoff within
the larger watershed; and,
WHEREAS, this portion of the LUPP should be changed to recognize the importance of watershed
planning, the need to develop mitigation measures, and acquisition as a means to protect water resources;and,
WHEREAS,staff is proposing that the Natural Resources Recommendations found on Page 79 of the
LUPP be changed to include general policy discussion that recognizes the importance of watersheds as they
relate to water resource protection; and,
WHEREAS, the new language in the LUPP would indicate that further stormwater management
planning on a watershed level is needed and would also reference such mitigation measures as stormwater
quality ponds and other best management practices be required as development occurs within a watershed;and,
WHEREAS,the Planning and Zoning Commission, at their meeting of June 21,2000,recommended
approval of this change to the LUPP.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the
change to the Natural Resource section of the LUPP as above-indicated is hereby approved.
