THE AMES TRIBUNE TO CHANGE PARKING METER
DURATIONS ALONG FIFTH STREET
FROM BURNETT AVENUE TO KELLOGG AVENUE
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,a request was received from The Ames Tribune to change the duration of six parking
meters located in front of their offices at 315 and 317 Fifth Street; and,
WHEREAS, this was requested to increase the turnover of these metered spaces for the
convenience of their customers; and,
WHEREAS,The Tribune has reported that these metered spaces are currently utilized for long-term
parking by employees and their customers have difficulty finding convenient parking spaces in the area;
and,
WHEREAS, The Tribune officials have requested that the parking duration be changed from 4
hours to 30 minutes, but have indicated that a 2-hour parking duration would be sufficient; and,
WHEREAS, staff has evaluated the use of parking meters along this section of Fifth Street and
believes that meters with a 2-hour duration along the north side of the block would provide more turnover
and convenient spaces for customers of the adjacent businesses; and,
WHEREAS,this measure was discussed by the Main Street Improvement District during their April
meeting, and they believed that the meters should be changed to a 2-hour rate consistent with other meters
in the Downtown area.

request of The Ames Tribune to convert 15 parking meters with 4-hour durations to 2-hour durations along
