RESOLUTION APPROVING CHANGES TO THE
URBAN REVITALIZATION PROGRAM CONCERNING
THE "SLUM AND BLIGHTED" REQUIREMENT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, City Council directed staff to review the requirement of"slum and blighted" on
the existing Urban Revitalization Program criteria matrices for Multiple-Family Residential and
Commercial; and,
WHEREAS, after reviewing the City's Building Code and the Code of Iowa regarding urban
revitalization areas,staff is suggesting that one approach to clarifying"slum and blighted"would be to
determine if a property is unsafe or has an unsafe use; and,
WHEREAS,under this proposal,the City Inspections Division will provide an opinion to the
City Council on whether or not a particular property is"slum or blighted"by meeting certain conditions
which render it substantially unsafe or have an unsafe use; and,
WHEREAS, an additional proposed condition to be met by the applicant addresses the aspect
of development on several lots with multiple principal structures or single lots with multiple principal
structures; and,
WHEREAS,to encourage the redevelopment ofthe majority ofthe property under a multiple-lot
development or multiple principal structure development, a majority of the assessed valuation of the
properties involved would be required to be found to be"slum and blighted"by the City Council before
it would qualify as an urban revitalization area.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that
the changes to the Urban Revitalization Program concerning the "slum and blighted"requirement are
hereby approved.
