RESOLUTION APPROVING FUNDS FOR
CENSUS PROMOTION ACTIVITIES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, in anticipation of next year's federal census,staff has been preparing efforts to
educate Ames residents regarding the importance of responding appropriately to the census; and,
WHEREAS, it is very important that all Ames residents understand the importance of
completing and returning a Census form; and,
WHEREAS, census counts comprise the basis for several types of state and federal revenue
sharing to the City and also have an impact upon the type and nature of growth which is attracted to
the community; and,
WHEREAS, it can be confusing to students and senior citizens who live in Ames most of
the year as to what address they should claim as their permanent address; and,
WHEREAS,to address these vital educational needs,City staff is developing a promotional
plan that will include an aggressive advertising campaign, direct mailings, and creation of a local
Complete Count Committee to reach out to special populations; and,
WHEREAS, at this time the estimated cost of these efforts is $15,000,which according to
Census Bureau officials, is the level of per capita funding being committed by other large
communities in the state.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that an allocation of $15,000 from the City's Contingency Fund for Census 2000 promotional
activities is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 14th day of December, 1999.
