RESOLUTION APPROVING REMOVAL OF THE
UNION DRIVE/WEST STREET/SHELDON AVENUE
TRAFFIC SIGNAL
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, staff has just completed an evaluation of the Union Drive/West Street/Sheldon
Avenue traffic signal to determine its continued need as a traffic control device due to its
deteriorating condition; and,
WHEREAS, because of the questionable condition of the traffic signal, its continued
existence places the City in a liability situation if vehicular accidents result from its malfunction;
and,
WHEREAS,pedestrian and vehicle counts were collected at the intersection,and both were
significantly under the signal warrant thresholds needed to justify the control; and,
WHEREAS,the plan to remove the traffic signal would include placing a 4-way stop control
at the intersection; and,
WHEREAS, staff has contacted Iowa State University officials concerning the removal of
the traffic signal, and those officials expressed no concerns about the removal or the subsequent
placement of a 4-way stop control at the intersection.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the removal of the Union Drive/West Street/Sheldon Avenue traffic signals and the placement
of a 4-way stop control at that intersection are hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 14th day of December, 1999.
