HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Designating Eisenhower Avenue as Temporary "Bicycle Friendly" Street RESOLUTION NO. 99-378 RESOLUTION DESIGNATING EISENHOWER AVENUE AS A TEMPORARY "BICYCLE FRIENDLY" STREET FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA WHEREAS, during a previous meeting, the City Council referred a request from a citizen to extend the Stange Road bicycle path from 24th Street to Bloomington Road; and, WHEREAS,the citizen believed that this bicycle path extension would enhance bicycling safety for Bloomington Heights residents and others in the area who want to travel directly to the Iowa State University Campus; and, WHEREAS, current plans do call for extending the Stange Road bicycle path north to Bloomington Road when the Somerset Subdivision and the area north of Somerset fully develop;and, WHEREAS,due to the availability ofbicycle funds and prioritized needs for paths in other areas of the community, staff does not recommend that this path be scheduled prior to the subdivision development; and, WHEREAS,staff believes there are other options to enhance safety for bicycling trips from the Bloomington Heights Subdivision to the ISU Campus,which includes designating an existing north- south parallel route to the Stange Road segment as a"bicycle-friendly" street; and, WHEREAS, Eisenhower Avenue could be utilized for this distinction since it does provide nearly a straight route with lower traffic volumes. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the designation of Eisenhower Avenue as a temporary"bicycle-friendly" street until the bicycle path is constructed along Stange road between Somerset Drive and Bloomington Road is hereby approved.
