RESOLUTION APPROVING CONSULTANT SERVICES CONTRACT
TO DEVELOP DESIGN CONCEPT STATEMENT FOR DAYTON AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
FROM 13TH STREET TO LINCOLN WAY
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,Dayton Avenue is an existing north-south arterial that provides primary access to the industrial area on the
east side of the community;and,
WHEREAS,although this Project is scheduled for 2000/2001 construction and has been included in previous Capital
Improvement Programs,no funding has been allocated for planning or design in the year before construction was to begin;and,
WHEREAS,given the size of the project,the impact the project will have on the adjoining properties,and considering
the projected growth in traffic volume,staff felt it was better to address these issues at this time prior to beginning design of the
Reconstruction Project;and,
WHEREAS, the study would evaluate and compare existing conditions and constraints with the future needs of the
community along with concerns of the businesses adjoining Dayton Avenue;and,
WHEREAS,the proposed study includes evaluating the needs and benefits for a grade-separated railroad crossing in
detail and the cost of each alternative and funding sources that are available,and will also determine construction staging of the
Project in order to minimize the impact on the industrial activities and other details relative to the Project;and,
WHEREAS, staff interviewed three local firms capable of providing consultant services to develop a project design
concept for this project;and,
WHEREAS, staff has selected Snyder & Associates to develop the concept statement for the Dayton Avenue
Reconstruction because of how they proposed to gather public input for the project;and,
WHEREAS,Snyder&Associates'proposal to gather information,conduct meetings with the resource group,develop
cost estimates for various alternative designs and present the project design for the Ontario Street Reconstruction project to the
City Council will cost$47,500;and,
WHEREAS, a total of$30,000 of unspent funds remains in the 1998/1999 Asphalt Resurfacing Program, and the
remaining$17,500 would come from unobligated balance of the Road use Tax Fund.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the consultant services
contract with Snyder&Associates to develop a project design concept for Dayton Avenue Reconstruction Project from 13th
Street to Lincoln Way in the amount of$47,500 is hereby approved.
