RESOLUTION APPROVING TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENT
PROGRAM (TSIP) FUNDING AGREEMENT FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLATION
AT THE U. S. 30 EASTBOUND
OFF-RAMP/ELWOOD DRIVE INTERSECTION
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, on April 6, 1999, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Commission
approved the City's grant funding request of$60,217 for constructing traffic signals at the U. S. 30
eastbound off-ramp/Elwood Drive intersection; and,
WHEREAS, since that time, DOT staff members have been putting together the project
agreement; and,
WHEREAS,this project has been included in the 1998/2002 Capital Improvement Plan since
traffic signals were highly prioritized at the location due to the high traffic volumes and excessive
delays at the intersection; and,
WHEREAS, traffic volume warrants are met for installing traffic signals at the U. S. 30
eastbound off-ramp/Elwood Drive intersection based on the Federal Highway Administration's"Manual
of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)peak-hour warrant; and,
WHEREAS,the U. S. 30/Elwood Drive intersection has also been prioritized for traffic signals
since it will experience significant traffic growth due to the new development in the southwest portion
of the City; and,
WHEREAS,the estimated cost for installing traffic signals at the intersection is$113,000 with
eligible material costs to be covered by this TSIP grant of$60,217.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that
the Traffic Safety Improvement Program Agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation for
traffic signal installation at Elwood Drive and U. S. 30 off-ramp is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 1 Oth day of August, 1999.
