HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Request from Ames High School for Homecoming Parade on Main Street RESOLUTION NO. 99-298 RESOLUTION APPROVING REQUEST FROM AMES HIGH HOMECOMING COMMITTEE FOR A PARADE ALONG FIFTH STREET AND MAIN STREET ON SEPTEMBER 27, 1999 WHEREAS, a request has been received from Ames High School to hold its 1999 Homecoming Parade on September 27, 1999,commencing at 6:30 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, at the present time, it is planned that this Parade will be routed along streets in the Downtown Business District including Main Street(Duff to Clark),Clark Avenue(Main to Fifth Street),and Fifth Street(Clark to Duff);and, WHEREAS,barricades will be placed on streets along this route for traffic-control purposes and will be manned by Ames High School officials; and, WHEREAS,police assistance will be needed at the two DuffAvenue intersections at Fifth Street and Main Street to direct traffic,the cost of which has been requested to be waived by the Parade organizers; and, WHEREAS,Parade organizers have also requested that an alternate route along Fifth Street and Sixth Street (between Clark and Duff Avenue)be used if street construction is still being performed along sections of Main Street east of Clark Avenue; and, WHEREAS,the staging area for the parade will be east of DuffAvenue on streets adjacent to the Bandshell Park (Sixth Street,Carroll Avenue,and Fifth Street); and, WHEREAS,to accommodate activities in this staging area,it is necessary to prohibit parking for a period from 3:30 to 8 PM;and, WHEREAS,the Main Street Improvement District has been informed of the parade and supports the activity again this year subject to parking being allowed along the metered areas in the surrounding District;and, WHEREAS,the organizers will post notices on parking meters and in storefronts notifying patrons and business owners about the Parade. WHEREAS,the Parade organizers have also requested to reserve September 30, 1999,as a rate date. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the requested parade route along Fifth Street and Main Street from the Ames High Homecoming Committee on September 27, 1999, to include parking prohibitions on Sixth Street,Carroll Avenue,and Fifth Street,but not along the metered areas in the Downtown District is hereby approved subject to the stipulation that the Committee provide adults to man City-provided barricades at 13 locations along the route. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the waiver of the costs for traffic control and police officers,the request by the Parade organizers to use an alternate Fifth and Sixth Street route if Main Street is still under construction east of Clark Avenue, and the rain date for this event of September 30 are also hereby approved.
