HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - REAP Grant Application - Squaw Creek Greenway System RESOLUTION NO. 99-244 RESOLUTION APPROVING RESOURCE ENHANCEMENT AND PROTECTION(REAP) GRANT APPLICATION FOR SQUAW CREEK GREENWAY SYSTEM FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,to date, five REAP grants totalling$750,000 have been awarded to the City of Ames; and, WHEREAS,the Squaw Creek Greenway System is a continuation of the Stuart Smith Park and Brookside Park REAP grants that were awarded to the City in 1995 and 1996; and, WHEREAS,the Squaw Creek Greenway System begins at the northwest edge of the City limits at Moore Memorial Park, passes between the Ames High School Prairie and the Iowa State University pasture and woodland, connects with Brookside Park,the Elwood pasture owned by ISU, and Stuart Smith Park; and, WHEREAS, the first step of Phase I was completed in 1997, and Stuart Smith Park was expanded to include the flood buy-out area and was physically linked with a pedestrian bridge and a hard-surfaced trail; and, WHEREAS,the second step of Phase I was the installation of a trail and a bridge installed in Brookside Park; and, WHEREAS,this REAP grant application is being submitted to accomplish the third step of Phase I that would include construction of a handicapped accessible trail through the Elwood pasture adjacent to Squaw Creek; and, WHEREAS,the trail will also be connected to the existing trails in Stuart Smith and Brookside Parks; and, WHEREAS, additionally, a pedestrian/bicycle bridge will be constructed across College Creek; and, WHEREAS,the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the City Council authorize staff to proceed with the REAP grant application. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the Resource Enhancement and Protection(REAP)grant application for continuation of the Squaw Creek Greenway System is hereby approved, and staff is authorized to proceed with the grant application.
