RESOLUTION APPROVING PHASING PLAN
FOR SOUTH DUFF MULTI-USE TRAIL DEVELOPMENT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance has awarded the City
$361,212.30 in Surface Transportation ProgramTransportation Enhancement Funds for the South Duff
Avenue Multi-Use Trail; and,
WHEREAS,the City requested$436,672 in funding to cover a portion of the trail cost,however,
there were insufficient funds in the grant program to cover the requested funding amount; and,
WHEREAS, as a result of the shortfall in funding, City staff believes that the trail project should
be split into two phases with the completion of the second phase subj ect to the receipt of additional funding
for the project; and,
WHEREAS, the two-phased trail plan consists of constructing the path from Airport Road to S.
16th Street in 2000/2001 and then extending it further north from S. 16th Street to S. Fifth Street in
2001/2002 (if Transportation Enhancement funds are available); and,
WHEREAS, the first phase development will extend a one-half mile path along the east side of
South Duff from S. 16th Street to Airport Road to connect to the existing path between Airport Road and
the Southdale residential area; and,
WHEREAS,the second phase consists of continuing the paved path along the west side of South
Duff Avenue from S. 16th to S. Fifth Street and would include the construction of a cantilevered bridge
structure along the Squaw Creek bridge; and,
WHEREAS,the Iowa DOT has been contacted about this phasing plan and have no problems with
its implementation.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa, that the
South Duff Multi-Use Trail Development Plan is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 8th day of June, 1999.
