RESOLUTION APPROVING SITE AND AUTHORIZING STAFF
TO NEGOTIATE A CONTRACT FOR PURCHASE OF PARK LAND
SOUTH OF OAKWOOD ROAD
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS,the Park Master Plan identifies South Ames,adjacent Oakwood Road,as one of the top priorities
for the development of a neighborhood park,and the Capital Improvements Plan for FY 1998/99 includes$100,000
for parkland acquisition and development; and,
WHEREAS, staff members researched what land was available that would meet the requirements for a
neighborhood park in this area; and,
WHEREAS,property that is owned by Floyd and Anna Christofferson at the intersection of Greenhills Drive
and Oakwood Road would serve residents well and the Christofferson's are willing to sell a portion of their farmstead
to the City; and,
WHEREAS, with the existing homes north of Oakwood Road and with current and future residential
development occurring south of Oakwood Road,this parcel is located in an ideal location; and,
WHEREAS,in Fall 1998,staff met with neighbors of this area to gain their insight into the City pursuing the
Christofferson's land for a park,and they wholeheartedly supported this site; and,
WHEREAS, the neighbors stated that due to safety concerns, they would like to have the speed limit on
Oakwood Road reduced from 45 to 35 miles per hour(mph); and,
WHEREAS,the Christofferson's have verbally agreed to sell a seven-acre rectangular piece of land to the City
for$11,000/acre; and,
WHEREAS, since this parcel of land is located in the County, annexation into the City of Ames will be
pursued;and,
WHEREAS,at their March 25, 1999,meeting,the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved
recommending that the City Council acquire this seven-acre parcel and requested the City's Traffic Engineer review
the speed limit of 45 mph on Oakwood Road.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,
that staff is hereby authorized to negotiate a purchase agreement for acquisition of a seven-acre parcel south of
Oakwood Road for a neighborhood park and direction is confirmed to the City's Traffic Engineer to review the speed
limit along Oakwood Road when the Wessex development is substantially completed later this year.
ADOPTED THIS 13th day of April, 1999.
