HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Agreement with IUOE Local 234, Publc Works Department RESOLUTION NO. 99-002 RESOLUTION APPROVING AGREEMENT WITH IUOE, LOCAL 234,FOR MODIFICATIONS TO WAGES AND JOB CLASSIFICATIONS IN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,the Water and Pollution Control, Parks and Recreation, and Public Works Departments within the City have positions that involve Laborer,Truck Driver,and Maintenance Worker classifications;and, WHEREAS, the main difference between the three classifications is the level of involvement in operating equipment,making decisions about what needs to be accomplished, and leading a work crew; and, WHEREAS, over the years in the Public Works Department, the lines between the job classes have become more and more blurred to the point where employees and management personnel are struggling with who is supposed to be doing what activity; and, WHEREAS,it has been suggested that all Public Works Department employees currently classified as Maintenance Workers would retain their position in that classification and Laborers and Truck Drivers would be reclassified to Maintenance Workers(or Process Workers at the Resource Recovery Plant); and, WHEREAS,for the current Laborers and Truck Drivers,and any new maintenance workers,a six-step program would be developed in the new classification that would require the employee to show proficiency in particular job activities and move from the starting salary to the top of the salary range over a 48-month period; and, WHEREAS,because the work activities in the Resource Recovery Division are much different than in the other Public Works divisions, those classifications are being combined into a new one entitled Process Worker; and, WHEREAS, the new pay scale has been determined for each employee, and the 1998/99 budget included$19,500 for this classification change. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the agreement with IUOE,Local 234,for combining the classifications of Laborer,Truck Driver,and Maintenance Worker into new classifications of Maintenance Worker and Resource Recovery Process Worker in the Public Works Department is hereby approved.
