AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 78 ON DOGS AND CATS OF THE
MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA BY REPEALING SECTIONS
78-1. 4, 78-8 AND 78-9 THEREOF: DEFINING DOGS AND CATS AT LARGE,
PROVIDING FOR THE IMPOUNDMENT OF DOGS AT LARGE AND UN-
LICENSED DOGS; AND PROVIDING REGULATIONS AND FEES FOR REPOSSESS-
ION THEREOF.
Be It Ordained By the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, as follows:
Section 1. That Chapter 78 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames,
Iowa be and the same is hereby amended by repealing Sections 78-1. 4, 78-8
and 78-9 thereof and enacting and substituting in lieu thereof the following
sections to be known as Sections 78-1. 4, 78-8 and 78-9 respectively of the
Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa;
78-1. 4 At Large. At large is intended to mean and
includes any dog or cat off the premises of its owner
or upon the public streets, alleys, public grounds,
school grounds or parks, within the City of Ames, Iowa.
A dog shall not be deemed at large if:
(a) It is attached to a leash of sufficient strength
to restrain the dog, where said leash is held by a
person competent to govern the dog; or
(b) Where accompanied by and under the control
of a responsible person and the dog is responsive to
a voice or other command control; or
(c) Where properly restrained in a motor vehicle
or housed in an animal hospital approved by the city
sanitarian.
78-8 Impounding. Any dog at large or any dog without
proper license from the City of Ames, shall be subject
to seizure and impoundment in a place provided by the
City of Ames.
78-9 Repossession. The possession of any licensed
dog so seized or impounded may be obtained by the
owner upon payment to the City Clerk of the sum of
Two ($2. 00) Dollars, a daily fee of One ($1. 00) Dollar
for keeping such dog for each day or fraction thereof
during which said dog has been impounded, and upon
proper identification of said dog. The possession of
any unlicensed dog may be obtained by the owner after
obtaining a license and paying the fees provided herein.
Section 2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the
provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed.

Section 3. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage and publication as provided by law.
