HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Amending Chapter 25 of Municipal Code (Traffic) ORDINANCE NO. 941 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 25 ON TRAFFIC OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA, BY AMENDING SECTION 25-23 THEREOF REGULATING VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC WITH RED WITH GREEN ARROW AND PEDESTRIAN WALK, WAIT OR DON'T WALK TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNAL LEGEND; BY REPEALING SECTIONS 25-111.4, 25-24 and 25-60 THEREOF: ENACTING RATES IN PARKING METER LOT NO. 1; ENACTING VEHICULAR TRAFFIC REGULATIONS ON FLASHING SIGNALS; AND ENACTING REGULATIONS ON VEHICLES APPROACHING OR ENTERING INTERSECTIONS. Be It Ordained By The City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, as follows: Section 1. That Section 25-111.4 of Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa be and the same is hereby repealed, and the following is enacted in lieu thereof to be known as Section 25-111.4 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa: 25-111.4. Meter Rates - Lot No. 1. The rate for parking shall be Five (5) cents for sixty (60) minutes, with a two (2) hour maximum time limit for parking, except that the South twelve (12) parking stalls shall have a maximum time limit of four ( 4) hours for parking. Section 2. That Section 25-23 of Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa be and the same is hereby amended by adding thereto the following to be known as Section 25-23 (d) of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa: 25-23(d) Red With Green Arrow. (1) Vehicular traffic facing such signal may cautiously enter the intersection only to make the movement indicated by such arrow, but shall not interfere with other traffic or en- danger pedestrians lawfully within a crosswalk. (2) No pedestrian facing such signal shall enter the roadway unless he can do so safely and without interfering with any vehicular traffic. Section 3. That Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa be and the same is hereby amended by adding thereto the following Section to be known as Section 25-23�1 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa. 25--23.1 Pedestrial Walk, Wait or Don' t Walk Signals. When special pedestrian control signals exhibiting the words "Walk" or "Wait" or "Don' t Walk" are in place, said terms shall indicate and apply to drivers of vehicles and pedestrians as follows: (a) Walk. Pedestrians facing such signal may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the signal and shall be given the right-of-way by the drivers of all vehicles. (b) Wait or Don' t Walk. No pedestriah shall start to cross the roadway in the inter- section of such signal, but any pedestrian who has partially completed his crossing on the "Walk" signal shall proceed to a sidewalk, or a safety zone, while the "Wait" or "Don't Walk" signal is showing. That Section 25-24 of Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa be and the same is hereby repealed and the following enacted in li4u thereof to be known as Section 25-24 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa. 25-24. Flashing Signals. Whenever flashing red or yellow signals are used they shall require obedience by vehicular traffic as follows: (a) Flashing red (stop signal) . When a red lens is illuminated by rapid intermittent flashes, drivers of vehicles shall stop before entering the nearest crosswalk at an intersection or at a limit line when marked and the right to proceed shall be subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign. (b) Flashing yellow (caution signal) . When a yellow lens is illuminated with rapid inter- mittent flashes, drivers of vehicles may proceed through the intersection or past such signal only with caution. (Section 5. That Section 25-60 of Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa be and the same is hereby repealed, and the following shall be enacted in lieu thereof to be known as Section 25-60 of the Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa: 25-60. Approaching or Entering Intersections. Where two vehicles are approaching on any public street or highway so that their paths will intersect and there is danger of collision, the vehicle approaching the other from the right shall have the right of way. The foregoing rule is modified at through highways and otherwise as stated in this chapter. Section 6. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed. Section 7. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law. Passed this 21st day of July 1959. I M. W. ord n, Clerk ear e P.
