` ORDINANCE NO. 717
AN ORDINANCE GOVERNING THE CONSTRUCTION, RECONSTRUCTION, ALTERATION,
REPAIR, USE AND OCCUPANCY, AREA, HEIGHT, AND MAINTENANCE OF ALL
BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF
AMES, IOWA; AND REGULATING THE INSPECTION OF ALL CONSTRUCTION, MAJOR
REPAIRS, REMODELING, AND THE INSTALLATION OF ELECTRIC, HEATING, VEN-
TILATING, AIR-CONDITIONING, AND PLUMBING FIXTURES, APPARATUS AND
EQUIPMENT, AND REGULATING THE MOVING, REMOVAL, REPAIR OR DISMANTLIN
OF ALL BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES; AND PROVIDING FOR THE ESTABLISHMEN
OF FIRE LIMITS DISTRICTS AND THE OFFICIAL FIRE LIMITS DISTRICT MAP;
AND PROVIDING FOR THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS AND COLLECTION OF FEES AN
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BOARD OF APPEALS AND REPEAL OF ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT THEREWITH, AND TO PRESCRIBE PENALTIES FOR THE VIOLATION
THEREOF.
Whereas, the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa , had deter-
mined that a Building Code should be adopted as an Ordinance of the
Municipal Corporation in order to insure public safety, health and
welfare in so far as they are affected by building construction,
through structural strength, adequate egress facilities, sanitary
equipment, light and ventilation and fire safety; and in general to
secure safety to life and property from all hazards incident to the
design, erection, moving, repairs, removal, demolition or use and
occupancy and maintenance of buildings, structures or premises; and
to conserve the value of property and encourage the most appropriate
use thereof throughout the City;
Now, Therefore, Be It Ordained by the City Council of the City
of Ames, Iowa :
Section 1. Short Title : This ordinance shall be known and may
be cited and referred to as the Building Code of the City of Ames,
Iowa, to the same effect as if the full title were stated.
Section 2 . That pursuant to a public notice, a public hearing
was duly held and the City Council has herewith determined that the
proposed Building Code should be adopted as an Ordinance of the
Municipal Corporation. That an official copy of the Building Code,
as adopted, is now on file in the office of the City Clerk in the
City Hall, Ames, Iowa, duly certified, by the Mayor and duly attested
by the City Clerk.
Section 3 . The official copy of the Building Code, fully certi-
fied and attested, now on file in the City Clerk' s office of Ames,
Iowa, is hereby declared to be a part of this Ordinance as fully

and completely as if set out in detail herein.
Section 4 . The official Fire Limits District Map, fully certi-
fied and attested, now on file in the City Clerk ' s Office of Ames,
Iowa , with all its designations, is hereby declared to be a part of
this Ordinance as fully and as completely as if set out in detail
herein.
Section 5. Amendments to Building Code : Amendments t• the
Building Code Ordinance may be adopted by the same procedure and
attestation as required for the adoption of the original Building
Code Ordinance and in accordance with the requirements of Chapter
148 of the Acts of the 54th General Assembly.
Section 6 . Violations and Penalties: Any person, firm, co-
partnership, corporation, or other associations of persons either
acting directly or through employees or agents, that violates, dis-
obeys, omits, neglects, refuses to comply with, or resists the en-
forcement of any provision of the Building Code Ordinance shall be
deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof for each
offense shall be fined a sum not exceeding $100. 00 or imprisonment
in the City or County jail for a term not to exceed thirty (30) days.
Section 7. Conflicting Ordinances: Ordinance No . 584 "AN
ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING THE FIRE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA" ;
Ordinance No . 489 "AN ORDINANCE TO REGULATE THE LOCATION, ERECTION,
MAINTENANCE OR PLACING OF SIGNS" ; Ordinance No . 560 "AN ORDINANCE
PROVIDING FOR THE REPAIR, REMOVAL AND DESTRUCTION OF DANGEROUS BUILD-
INGS" ; Ordinance No. 588 "AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE USE, HANDLING,
STORAGE AND SALE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS" ; Ordinance No . 476 "AN ORDI-
NANCE REQUIRING CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, MUSBUMS, SOCIAL CENTERS,
COMMUNITY BUILDINGS, HOSPITALS AND SIMILAR BUILDINGS TO CONFORM TO 1
BUILDING REQUIREMENTS" ; Ordinance No . 581 "AN ORDINANCE PRESCRIBING
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF ELECTRIC LIGHT, HEAT
AND POWER, WIRING, FIXTURES, APPLIANCES AND ELECTRICAL WORK" ; and
Ordinance No . 633 "AN ORDINANCE TO PRESCRIBE RULES AND REGULATIONS
FOR THE CONSTRUCTION, RECONSTRUCTION, ALTERATION AND REPAIR OF OR
CONVERSION TO GAS HEATING APPLIANCES" , are hereby specifically re-
pealed; and all Ordinances or parts of Ordinances in conflict with

any of the provisions of this Ordinance are hereby repealed and
shall give way to and be superseded by this Ordinance, providing,
however, that such repeal shall not in any way affect any act here-
to fore committed in violation of such ordinance or ordinances so
repealed, or any proceedings now pending thereunder, but all such
offenses heretofore committed against the provisions of such ordi-
nance or ordinances may be prosecuted and punished the same as if
said ordinance or ordinances were in full force or effect.
Section 35; Effective Date: This Ordinance shall be in full
force and effect after its passage and publication as provided by
law.
