All ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 542., PARTICULARY SECTION
129 OF ARTICLE XI OF ORDINANCE NO. 542.
BE IT ORDAIN BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APES, IOWA:
Section 1. That Section 129 of Article XI of Ordinance No. 542 of the
City Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically repealed
and that the following shall hereinafter be known as Section 129 of Ordinance
No. 542.
Section 129. Disposal of Sanitary Sewage and Wastes to Other Than a
Sanitary- Sewer. No private sewage disposal works shall be constructed where
a public sewer is available to the first floor of a building nor operated
or maintained thereafter when a blic sewer is available. When a sanitary
sewer is not available, the sanitary sewage and wastes from buildings shall
be disposed of in the following manner:
The drain pipes from buildings shall be connected with a private
sewage disposal works designed and constructed in accordance with Ap-
pendix 73, State Plumbing Cre (1941).
The septic tank shall 'e the single compartment type and construc-
ted of eonerete, corrosion- esisting metal, or other impervisous material.
Metal tanks shall have a minimum wall thickness of 1J+ gauge.

Each compartment shall lihave a minirrnum effective (liquid) capacity
of 125 gallons, but in no c se shall the total capacity of the unit
below the waterline be less than 500 gallons.
The subsurface filter (or disposal field) to be provided for all
septic tank effluents shall be based on the following minimum capaci-
ties and requirements:

A dosing tank should be installed ahead of filter when more than 15 persons
are to be served. The design should be submitted to the Iowa State Department
of Health for approval.
# Lay distributor tile on bed of coarse sand or gravel 6 inches deep.
In clay or other similar formations, a double line of tile consisting of
both distributor and collector should be installed.
The following distances shall be maintained between potential sources
of pollution and any well used for drinking or culinary purposes:
Open jointed sewers, drains, disposal fields, subsurface filters,
absorption fields, cesspools, leaching pits, or other source of pollution -
75 feet.
Septic Tanks ------ 50 feet.

Where local conditions permit, greater distances may be required.
Sewers and drains farther -than 10 feet but within 50 feet shall be
extra heavy cast iron calked lead joints.
Sewers and drains farther than 50 feet but within 75 feet may be
cast iron pipe with lead joints or vitrified clay pipe with joints of
calked hemp and cement or other approved jointing material.
Subsurface filters or absorption fields shall not be located within
25 feet of any stream or open ditch, unless a collector the is installed,
nor within 10 feet of any dwelling or building intended for human occupancy.
A plan showing the location and design of the proposed septic tank
and secondary treatment and the location of any and all wells within 75
feet of the site shall be filed with the application for a plumbing
permit.
Toilets shall not be installed in basements of dwellings served by
private sewage disposal systems where it would be necessary to lay the
subsurface filter tile more than 2 feet deep. Under these conditions,
laundry wastes or basement drainage shall discharge into a leaching pit,
located and constructed as herein described, or into a sump equipped
with an approved type pump for lifting into the house sewer.
Cesspools, dry wells, earth pit toilets, or leaching pits shall not
be permitted for bathroom wastes.
Kitchen and laundry wastes may be discharged into a leaching pit
containing not less than 3 cubic yards of crushed rock below the inlet.
The pit shall be covered with not less than 12 inches nor more than 24
inches of loose filled earth.
In areas where no satisfactory disposal of septic tank effluent is
available, impervious vault toilets may be installed and used.
Impervious vault toilets shall not be located within 50 feet of any
well or dwelling.
The vault shall be constructed of impervious concrete not less than
6 inches in thickness and provided with a cleanout opening fitted with
a fly-tight cover. The vault shall have a capacity of not less than 50
cubic feet.
All impervious vault toilets shall be thoroughly cleaned and dis-
infected at least once each year and shall be maintained in a sanitary
condition at all times.
Section 2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the
provisions of this amendment are hereby repealed.
Section 3. This amendment to Ordinance No. 542 of the city ordinances of
he City of Ames, Iowa shall be in force and effect from and after its passage
d publication as provided by law.
