HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Amending Ordinance 647 (Traffic and Parking) ORDINANCE NO. 679 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 647, AN ORDINANCE REGULATING TRAFFIC AND PARKING ON THE STREETS, AVE- NUES AND PUBLIC PLACES OF THE CITY OF AMES, BY AMEND- ING SECTION 3, SPEED AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, BY INSERT- ING SECTION 19A, PARKING PROHIBITED, AND BY AMENDING SECTION 63, THROUGH HIGHWAYS Be It Ordained by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa: Section 1. That Section 3, Speed Restrictions, of Ordinance No. 647 of the City Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically repealed and the following shall hereinafter be known as Section 3 of said Ordinance No. 647: "Section 3. Speed restrictions. Any person driving a motor ve- hicle on the streets shall drive the same at a careful and prudent speed not greater than, nor less than, is reasonable and proper, having due regard to the traffic surface, and width of the street and of any other conditions then existing, and no person shall drive any vehicle upon a street at a speed greater than will permit him to bring it to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead, such driver having the right to assume, however, that all persons using said street will observe the law. The following shall be the lawful speed, except as hereinbefore or hereinafter modified, and any speed in excess thereof shall be un- lawful: 1. Twenty miles per hour in any business or school district. 2. Twenty-five miles per hour in any residence district. 3. Forty miles per hour for any motor vehicle drawing another vehicle. 4. Forty-five miles per hour in any suburban district. 5. Fifteen miles per hour in any public park or cemetery. 6. Twenty-five miles per hour on Sixth Street to Squaw Creek Bridge. Thirty miles per hour from Squaw Creek Bridge west tc Wallace Road." Section 2. That Ordinance No. 647 of the City Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby amended by inserting after Section 19 the following section which shall hereafter be known as Section 19A of Ordinance No. 647: "Section 19A. Parking Prohibited. The parking of vehicles is also hereby prohibited at all times in the following places: (a) On the east side of Duff Avenue from the north line of Fifth Street to the South line of Sixth Street. (b) On the north side of West Street from Sheldon Avenue to Hyland Avenue. (c) On the east side of South Kellogg Avenue from z Lincoln Way to South Second Street." Section 3. That Section 63, Through Highways, of Ordinance No. 647 of the City Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically repealed and the following shall hereinafter be known as Section 63 of said Ordinance No. 647: "Section 63. Through Highways. The following streets within the City of Ames, Iowa, are hereby designated and established as through highways, and every operator of a vehicle shall bring such vehicle to a full stop at the stop sign or at a clearly marked stop line before entering such through highway except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic-control signal: (a) Grand Avenue from the north corporate limits to its intersection with Lincoln Way. (b) Lincoln Way from the east to west corporate limits. (c) South Duff Avenue from the south corporate limits to its intersection with Lincoln Way. (d) Ninth Street from the east line of Carroll Avenue to the west line of Ridgewood Avenue except at Grand Ave- nue. (e) Knapp Street from the west line of Ash Avenue to the west line of Hayward Avenue. (f) Thirteenth Street from the east line of Maxwell Ave- nue to the west line of Crescent Street except at Grand Avenue. (g) West Street from the east line of Sheldon Avenue to the west line of Campus Avenue. (h) North Western Avenue at Allan Drive. (i) Beech Avenue from Lincoln Way to the south cor- porate limits. (j) Sixth Street from the west line of Grand Avenue to Squaw Creek Bridge." Section 4. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the pro-' visions of this amendment are hereby repealed. Section 5. This amendment to Ordinance No. 647 of the City Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, shall be in full force and effect from and after passage and publication as provided by law.
