ORDINANCE NO. 638
AN ORDINANCE AR"iEENDING ORDINANCE NO. 542.
Be It Ordained by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa.
Section i. That Section 23 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically re-
pealed and tnat the following shall hereinafter be Down as Section
23 of Ordinance No. 542:
"Section 23. House sewer test and inspection. The
house sewer shall be grade tight and shall be inspected
and tested before covering. The test tee shall be placed
at or near the :main sewer. "
Section 2, That Section 79 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ares, Iowa, is hereby specifically re-
pealed and that the following shall hereinafter be xnown as Section
79 of Ordinance No. 542:
"Section 79. Sand interceptors, garage sumps. Sand
interceptors, garage sumps and similar devices, when in-
stalled, shall be readily accessible for cleaning and be
of an approved design. They shall be connected to the
storm sewer system when storm sewers are available. "
Section 3. That Section 115 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically
repealed.
Section 4, That Section 122 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically re-
pealed and that the following shall nereinafter be xnown as Section
122 of Ordinance No. 542 :
"Section 122. Branch, individual, group vents, and wet
vents. No vents shall be less than 1i inches in diameter.
For li and 12 inch wastes the vent shall be of. the same
diameter as the waste pipe, and in no case shall a branch or
main vent have a diameter less than one-half that of the
soil or waste pipe served, and in no case shall the length of
a branch vent of given diameter exceed the maximum length
permitted for the main vent serving the same soil or vent
stacz.
A group of fixtures located on the same floor level
may be group vented, providing that the highest fixture
trap of such a group is not more than four (4) feet above
the lowest fixture trap, but such installations shall be
subject to the following limitations:
(a) One fixture of two or less units may grain into the
vent of a 3 inch closet branch.
(b) One fixture of two or less units may drain into
the vent of a 12 inch bathtub waste pipe.
(c) Two fixtures of two or less units may drain into
the ventoof a 2 inch bathtub waste serving two or less
tubs providing that they drain into the vent at the sane level.
(d) Juhere bathrooms or water-closets or other fixtures
are located on opposite sides of a wall or partition or are
adjacent to each other within the prescribed distance, such
fixtures may have a common soil or waste pipe and common
vent. Water closets naving a common soil and vent stack
shall drain into the stack at the same level. Lavatories,
sinks or similar fixtures naving a common waste and vent
pipe shall drain into the pipe at the same level.

Wherever possible all vents shall be continuous vents,
that is, a continuation of the vertical waste line.
Basement closets or floor drains whose connection to
trae house drain is 5 feet or more from the base of the stack
may be vented by a wet vent from a lst floor sink or
lavatory having a 12 inch vent pipe for a 3 inch closet
branch or a 2 inch vent for a 4 inch closet branch, or for
a basement closet installed in one-family residences pro-
vided the connection is made to a 4 inch house drain at
least 5 feet from the base of the stack and the developed
length be not more than 12 feet from the house drain."
Section 5. That Section 126 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically re-
pealed and that the following shall hereinafter be known as Section
126 of Ordinance No. 542:
"Section 126. Future vents. A 12 inch vent pipe may be
extended below the basement ceiling line for future fixtures. "
Section 6. That Section 132 of Ordinance No. 542 of the City
Ordinances of the City of Ames, Iowa, is hereby specifically re-
pealed and that the following shall hereinafter be known as Section
162 of Ordinance No. 542:
"Section 132. Material . The house sewer beginning 5
feet outside of the inner face of building wall shall be
of "Standard" or "Extra Heavy" cast iron bell and spigot
pipe joints calked with molten lead not less than 12 oz. per
inch diameter of pipe. The house drain shall be of lead,
brass, copper, or "Extra Heavy" cast iron. Cast iron to
'nave bell and spigot joints calked with molten lead not less
than 12 oz. per inch diameter of pipe. "
Aection 7. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in con-
flict with the provisions of this drdinance are hereby repealed.
Section 8* This ordinance shall be in force and effect from
and after its 1_,assage and publication as provided by law.

and properly passed at a meeting of the City Council on the 17th
day of November, 1947, and published in the Milepost on the 20th
day of November, 1947.
