Be It Ordained by the City Counc.1.1 of the City of Ames, Iowa:
Section le Permit Required. No persons firm or corporation shall be-
gin work on the installationl construction, reconstruction., or conversion to any
gas heating appliance in any building in the City of Anes., Iowa.9 unless and un-
til he or it 'I'las a permit therefor.
Section 2. Application for Permit* Any person., firm or corporation
desiring a permit as required herein shall file with the City Manager an appli-
cation in writing on the standard form provided by the City for such permits
Section 3. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation.,
except those duly franchized by the City of Ames, Iovial or their duly authorized
agents or employees, to installp constructp reconstruct., alter, repair or open
the service pipe or service extensiong or set or remove the service meter or
regulator,# or do any work of any kind on the parts of the gas supply system up
to and including the meter.
Section 4* No 2-as heatin,; appliance shall be installed which does not
comply as to construction and perforriiance with a nationally recognized testing
agency.
Section 5. No devices employing or depending upon an electrical cur-
rent shall be used to control or igmite a gas supply if the failure of the elec-
trical current could result in t,e escape gas
in-i)urned gas.
Section 6* No ras water heater shall be installed in a room having,
a cubic content of less than six hundred (600) cubic feet.
Section 7, No gas-fired floor furnace shall be installed unless the
installation complies with the following:
(a) The floor furnace shall not be installed in a lo-
cation Ykiere there is a possibility of the furnace being
fl=Wwith water.
(b) The flue pipe from the furnace shall not contact
the earth.
(c) No gas heating appliance or piping shall be in-
stalled in any location which will obstruct any aisle or
passap.,eway of any auditoriump public hall., or place of
public assembly.
(d) Yffiere a gas furnace or -.-as water heater is sup-
ported on a frame floor'9 the portion of the floor acting
as a support for such appliance shall be headed with a
fraue work of material not lighter than the floor joists.
(e) All has floor furnaces shall be equipped with a
gas pressure regulator vhich shall be adjusted so the gas
input does not exceed the rating as shown on the manu-
facturer's nameplate attached to the furnace.
(f) No automatic pilot shall be installed in the field
on a floor furnace unless such automatic pilot has been speci-
fically approved by the furnace manufacturer for use on such
furnace.
(g) All floor furnaces shall be required to have auto-
matic safety pilots installed thereon*
Sect-'Lon 8. No gas-fired boilers or furnaces for heating a building
or buildixigs shall be installed and no boiler or furnace designed for other
fuels shall be converted to the use of has unless the following regulation's are
complied with:
(a) Flit her a thermostatic pilot lights so constructed
and adjusted that no gas can flow through the main burner
unless Vie pilot light is burning,, or acme other similar
type of safety device serving this same end shall be em-
ployed.
(b) The boiler or furnace shall be equipped with ap-
proved safety devices arranged to limit high steam pressures
or water temperatures or low water in steam boilers or high
air temperatures in warm air furnaces. Safety devices oper-
ating electrically shall not depend upon the closing of the
circuit to shut off the main gas supply. Limiting controls
and low water shut-off intended to disconnect the appliance
from the electric power supply shall be connected into the
appliance supply circuit on the supply side of all other
control circuits.
(c) Every gas boiler# furnaces space heater, unit
heaters and water heater shall be connected to a flue
which will conduct the flue gas to the outer air. The
flue shall not be smaller than the flue opening on the
boilers furnaces space heaters unit heater., or water
heater. In case of conversion burners the section of the
flue pipe between the outlet of the appliance and the draft
hood shall not be less than one square inch per 7,500 hourly
BTU input* In no case sj-,all this flue pipe be less than five
(5) inches in diameter for central gas heating appliances
nor less than four (4) inches in diameter for space heating
appliances, and it shall not be larger than the next inte-
gral inch diameter above the size given in the table (1)
below:

(d) No damper is permitted to be used in a flue pipe.
(e) A draft diverter shall be placed in and made a
part of the flue pipe from the appliances or in the appli-
ance itself*
(f) The draft diverter shall be located at a point not
lower than the top of tie hi(hest flue passage in the ap-
pliance*

(g) All heating ,surfaces and f l.ueways of the plant
shall be gas tight and shall be thoroughly cleaned of soot,
carbon, and other foreirn substances before a conversion
burner is installed.
(h) At least one door on the gas-.Fired boiler or fur-
nace stall be hinged to swing freely.
(i) All conversion burners shall be installed so as
to per- t accessibility* for inspection.
(j) A manually operated shut.-off valve shall be in-
stalled in the main gas supply line to a conversion burner
and positioned at a point readily accessible for use and
inspec+lon.
(k) No vent pipe from a gas appliance shall be inter-
connected with any other fuel vent pipe, smoke pipe, or flues
unless such gas appliance is equipped with an automatic de-
vice to prevent the escape of unburned gas at the main burner
or burners.
Section 9. No gas burning appliance shall be connected to any chim-
ney or flue unless the chimney or flue construction or location complies with
one of the followings
(a) Flues of mAsonry, brick, or reinforced concrete
small be required for (1) all t;as incinerators, and (2)
all, appliances which may be converted to the use of a
solid or liquid fuel.
(b) Vent piping of noncaabustiblet corrosion-resistant
material having gas tight joints may be used but shall not
be installed in any outside wall or on the outside of any
building.
Section 10. Chimneys or flues installed for use of gas heating ap-
pliances but which are not s ua table for solid or liquid fuels :oust be plainly
and permanently labeled "Ti-,is flue is for use of gas burning appliances only".
This label shall be attached at a point near *ere the vent pipe enters a wall,
floor# or ceiling.
Section 11. All chimneys and vents used as vents for gas appliances
shall extend at least eighteen (18) inches above the topmost part of the roof
of the building in -daich the appliance is basing used.
Section 12. All venting ,Ball be so installed as to prevent raechani-
cal injury to the vent.
Section 13. A11 interior gas piping shall conform vdth Tables II and
III as set forth below as regard to determining pipe sizes. Tnese tables give
the B.T.U. capacity in cubic feet per hour for various sizes and lengths of
pipe and pipe fittings. The tables are based on natural sass supplied at approxi-
mately six (6) inches water column pressure at the meter and with a pressure
drop of 0.2 inches and Specific Gravity o.65.

Section 14* Standard full-weight mrought iron or steel pipe and fit-
tings free from defects she11 be used in conveying has to appliances.
Section 15. No pipe which has been previously used to convey water
shall be used for conveying gas.
Section 16. A31 gas heating appliance pressire regulators shall be
vented to the o, taid* of the building or into the furnace.
Section 17. A31 pipe and fittings sl`jall be tested for leaks by ap-
plying a solution of soap and water to the exterior of the system before the
appliance is permanently used.
Section 13. Validity of Ordinance. Should any provision of this
ordinance be held by any Court of cccipetent jurisdiction to be invalids such
decision shall not affect the validity of the reiainder of the ordinance.
Section 19* Violation of ordinance. Any persons firm, or corporation
violating any provision of this ordinance shall,$ upon conviction thereof,, be
-fined a such not exceeding 4,ZOO&OO and costs] and in default of payment thereof
shall be committed to the City or County jail until such fine and costs are
paid, not exceeding thirty days*
Section 20* Repeal of Conflicting Ordinances. That all orc,inances
or parts of ordinance. in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 21. Ord-inance in effect. T'hds ordinance shall take effect
and be in force from and after its passage and publication as requ:J.red by laws
