Ordinance No. 514
AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING AND REGULATING RATES TO. BE
CHARGED FOR MANUFACTURED GAS AND NATURAL GAS IN THE
CITY OF AMES, IOWA
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA:
Section 1. That the rates to be charged for manufactured .gas
in the City of des, Iowa, from and after May 20, 1940 are hereby;
fixed and established as follows :
1. For the first 600 cubic feet or less per month, $1..00
which will constitute the minimum charge.
2. For the next 2,40-0 cubic feet per month,
$1.30_ per M. Cu. Ft.
3. For the next 7,000 cubic feet per month,
1.10 per M. Cu. Ft.
4. For all over 10,000 cubic feet per month,
$.80 per M. Cu. Ft.
Section 2. That the rates to be charged for natural gas in the
City of Ames, Iowa, for general uses exclusive of heating, from and
after May 20, 1940 are hereby fixed and established as, follows:
GENERAL USE RATE:
First 300 cu* ft* or part thereof per month 411.00
Next 1200 cu. ft. @ $2.00 per M. C. F.
Balance over 1500 cu. ft. @ $1.20 per M. C. F.
Section 3. That the rates to be charged for natural gas in the
City of Ames, Iowa to be used for heating and .including all uses
specified in Section 2 hereof, from and after May 20, 1940 are
hereby fixed and established as follows:
HEATING RATE:
First 300 cu. fto or part thereof. per month $1.00
Next 1200 cu. ft. @ 1.60 per M.C.F.
Next 1500 cu. ft. @ . .90 per M.C.F.
Next 7000 cu. ft. @ .60 per M.C.F.
Over 10,000 cu.ft. @ .50 per M.C.F.
Section 4. That the rates to be charged for natural gas in the
City of Ames, Iowa for industrial use from and after Ma7-20, 1940
are hereby fixed and established as follows;
CLASS I.
This schedule applies to gas used in special industrial
equipment designed exclusively for gas operation.
First 50 MCF per month Same as Heating Rate
Next 150 MCF per month 40� per. 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 800 MCF per month 35X per 1000 Cubic Feet
Excess MCF per month 25V per 1000 Cubic Feet
CLASS II.
This schedule applies to gas used as fuel under boilers
in central heating plants for hospitals, apartment build-
ings, hotels, schools, public buildings and churches.
First 50 MCF per month Same as Heating Rate
Next 50 MCF per month 40X,per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 400 MCF per month 30V per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 1,500 MCF per month 25X per 1000 Cubic Feet

CLASS III.
- This schedule applies to gas used as fuel under boilers
in central heating plants for office buildings, stores,
factories, theaters, and auditoriums.
First 50 MCF per month Same as Heating Rate
Next 50 MCF per month 40� per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 300 MCF per month 30X per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 600 MCF per month 25X per 1000 Cubic Feet
Excess MCF per month 20X per 1000 Cubic Feet
CLASS IV.
This schedule applies to gas used in' manufacturing and
industrial processes such as brick and pottery kilns,
cement kilns, glass furnaces, refinery stills, smelters,
iron foundries, steel works., and other similar industries.
First 50 MCF per month Same as Heating Rate
Next 50 MCF per month ' 40y per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 200 MCF per month . 30V per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 200 MCF per month 25� per 1000 Cubic Feet

CLASS
This -schedule applies to gas used for boiler fuel in power
plants.
First 50 MCF per month Same as Heating Rate
Next 50 MCF per month 40� per 1000 Cubic Feet
Next 200 MCF per month 25¢ per 1000 Cubic Feet
Excess MCF per month 20� per 1000 Cubic Feet
Section 5. The above rates are net and to avoid discrimination
and cover the added cost of collecting delinquent bills, bills not
aid within ten days after rendition may be increased ten per cent
(l00) on the first 10.00 and two per cent (2%) on amounts in excess
f ten dollars ($10.00).
Section 6. • The utility furnishing natural gas in the City of Ames
Iowa, to consumers under the rates specified in Section 4, shall have
he right to contract for same with said consumer and said contract
may contain a clause to the end that said service may be discontinue
n event of nonavailabili ty of said natural gas to said utility,
provided, however, there shall be no discrimination between consumer
n the same class in such contracts.
Section 7. The classes as set forth in Section 4 shall be entitled
to priority, in case of partial discontinuance, in the order of thei
umber commencing with Class I as that having maximum priority.
Section 8. The utility furnishing natural gas in the City of
es, Iowa, shall have the right to reasonably interpret the
efinitions of use for any individual consumer as outlined in the
five classifications under Section 4 hereof, provided, however, there
shall be no discrimination between consumers using gas for like
purposes*
Section 9f That any utility furnishing gas in the City of Ames
shall upon the application of persons desirous of using gas whOre
the mains are in front of or adjoining the property, furnish the
service from the main pipe to the lot line without cost or expense
to the consumer, but from the lot line a charge not exceeding 30g
per linear foot may be made for pipe so laid. Said utility may
charge the consumer $1.00 for setting of gas meter when service _
starts.
Section 10. The heating value of the natural gas delivered
ereunder shall be determined as the *gross heating value" per
cubic foot as delivered. If in any month, the arithmetic. average
f hourly gross heating value of the gas as delivered hereunder
shall be less than 980 or more than 1020 British thermal units
er cubic foot, then the volume of gas measured hereunder during
such month shall be increased or decreased in proportion to the
decrease below 980 or i ncrease above 1020 B.T.U. per cubic foot
as the case may be.
Section 11. The manufactured gas furnished shall have a "gross
heating value" of not less than 525 British Thermal Units, per
cubic foot, as delivered, with a daily allowable variation of 2%
either way. In case the monthly average falls below 525 British
Thermal Units, five cents (5�-.) per 1,000 cubic feet for each 10
British Thermal Units or fraction thereof shall be deducted from
the established rates.
Section 12. Any person, firm, or corporation violating any
provision of this Ordinance shall, upon conviction thereof, be
fined a sum not exceeding $100 and costs.
S Section 13. All Ordinances or parts of Ordinances in conflict
herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 14. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect
after its passage and publication as provided by law.
