After reading the Ames Tribune and reviewing the video from the last council meeting I had to send a message. I'm not able to attend tomorrow evening due to a previous volunteer commitment at Overflow Thrift Store. Please choose to not make this ordinance any stricter than it is already. The owners that have owned their properties before the moratorium should have the same rights as others had to make their property compliant and receive a LOC without the possibility of losing that certificate if they sell the property. Part of the hardship is the ability to sell for a far price... not just the ability to rent for the time being. The owners need to determine what is right for their properties, not the council. The current owners were not given a fair chance to decide to get a rental certificate before the moratorium and changing that or limiting their option(by way of making it only good during their ownership) shouldn't be on the table now. Changing this midstream is not right. Please choose to not make the hardship exemption part of the ordinance limited to the current ownership. In ten years this could still be an issue in selling and the next owner may need this exemption. This change is very short-sighted and will create problems you can't imagine in the future.
