Suzanne,
I'm very sorry this process has not gone smoothly. As far as I am aware, the street name
change ordinance is on the agenda for June 12th. I talked with Diane about the zip code change
taking affect May 28th so hopefully Council will be able to waive the three readings and pass it
on Tuesday. If that happens, I will send out my change of address letters on Wednesday.
As for the precincts, Diane might know who needs to be contacted. We will do our best to get
everything worked out.
As for the mail, I,had talked with Todd Oxley (Ames Post Master) before the zip code change
and he said the addresses changing from Nevada to Ames would be in their system with the
existing address until I send out the change of address letters. I would have thought their
system had been updated but sometimes things don't happen as quickly as we think, especially
since their database is managed by a third party. I have had a few random instances where their
database wasn't updated correctly in the past, but it hasn't happened very often, to my
knowledge.
Again, I apologize for all the headaches this is causing. Hopefully we'll be able to get it resolved
shortly. Thanks for your patience!

Annette,
Not to guilt you, but this has created some confusion!
Our daughter went to mail us a package (Randy's wallet which he accidentally left
in her car) and the post office in Michigan told her that our old address in Nevada
was no longer valid so she sent it to our old address, but with Ames as the city
which was valid according to their records. It never arrived so Randy spent two
hours yesterday going to both post offices to find out that our mail is still being
delivered by Nevada although our address is supposed to be Ames now.
We went to vote last night. Our address is still listed as Nevada, but our precinct
has changed to an Ames precinct. We voted in Ames and all is well.
We're not sure where we live anymore!!! It will be great to get this finalized. Are
we on track for the June 12th Council agenda?

I'm the person who assigns all new street addresses within the City of Ames and I coordinated
with Damion on requesting the speed limit and street name changes for the East Industrial
annexed area. I'm not usually involved with Council so I stopped and visited with Diane Voss
so I could better understand the timing of this proposed ordinance and she suggested I touch
base with you. Here's a little history for you if you aren't familiar with this project. As the
addressing person, I have a grid of block number ranges I used based on existing addressing
ordinances/procedures currently in place. The City addresses all start with the 100 block
range at the intersection of Lincoln Way and Duff Avenue, increasing along each axis away
from the start point. Currently our highest street addresses are a four-digit number. Story
County uses a five-digit number so the existing addresses need to be changed to fit within the
City's addressing grid. So along with new street names in this area, each property will be
assigned a four-digit number to fit our addressing scheme. That portion of the annexed area
east of 580th Avenue is currently in the Nevada zip code boundary, which can only be
changed by the Post Office. At the time of the annexation, none of us realized the zip code
would not automatically change from Nevada to Ames. In September, I made a request to the
Post Office to change the zip code. That request has been approved and will take effect on
May 28, 2018. Our original plan was to have the new street name ordinance approved and in
effect about the same time as the zip code change so the residents only have to change their
address once. Obviously we aren't going to quite make that deadline now. Diane thinks that
the zip code change going into effect on Tuesday is justification enough to have the ordinance
on the June 12th Council agenda, requesting that Council approve all three readings that
night. As soon as the ordinance is approved, I will get the change of address letters sent out
the following morning. Is it possible for you to have the ordinance ready for the June 12th
meeting? If you have any questions about my addressing and street naming process or if you
need additional information, please feel free to ask.
Thank you!
Annette
