Department of Planning & Housing

TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Kelly Diekmann, Planning &Housing Director
DATE: April 10, 2018
SUBJECT: Continue public hearing for zoning text amendment related to public art installation in
setbacks
On January 9, 2018, the City Council directed staff to prepare a text amendment to allow for
placement of public art in setbacks in coordination with Public Art Commission (PAC) approval.
This action was in response to a letter from Pat Brown, who is interested in creating an art corridor along
South Duff Avenue. The intent is to promote the location of publically visible art installations on private
property, as a coordinated effort between the City of Ames Public Art Commission and local businesses.
A public hearing was noticed for April loth to have City Council consider the draft ordinance for the
proposed change. However, more time is needed to allow staff time to work through the details of the
public art easement requirements and the artwork selection process in coordination with the Public Art
Commission.
Therefore, Staff requests that on Tuesday night, April loth, the City Council continue the hearing
until the May 81h City Council meeting.
