HomeMy WebLinkAboutA012 - Email from Gary Kline dated May 20, 2018 Rental Cap G R to: AmesCityCouncil@city.ames.ia.us 05/20/2018 09:43 AM Cc: "jrjacob@iastate.edu" Members of the Ames City Council, My wife and I moved to Oakland St. in 1980. The house we bought was built in 1935 and we are only the second owners. The first was Henry Gilman. They named the chemistry building on campus after him. Our neighbor across the street was Jay Lush. They named Lush Auditorium after him. Most of the neighbors had lived here for 30-50 years when we moved here. We chose this area because of the mature trees, wildlife, close proximity to the campus, the architecture, and the great neighbors. This is still a great historic neighborhood but if more rentals start creeping in it will lose the charm it once had. Being an old person, I can remember the days when colleges and universities had an obligation to provide housing for their students, thus reducing pressure on established neighborhoods. This no longer seems to be the case. I don't know whether that's due to lack of state funding, or pressure from developers and realtors who make lots of money off students. Please include the Oakwood Forest and Edwards neighborhoods in the 25% rental cap ordinance. Gary Kline
