Good morning!
I am unable to attend the meeting scheduled for Tuesday February 14th and would like to offer
my suggestions in reference to Item#31: Follow-up regarding sidewalk care requirements,
alcohol service.
First, I would like to thank the city staff for the report, and city council for hearing this issue- I
realize I am only one business owner, however the opportunity to voice ideas for increasing the
overall Ames Mainstreet foot traffic and shopping experience is gratifying.
There are many times during the warmer months that an outdoor service area would be beneficial
to myself, other business owners, and patrons wishing to enjoy the lovely weather. For example,
our Mainstreet Farmer's Market! Thousands of people saunter along the street and sidewalks
every Saturday!
In reading the comprehensive staff report. I believe that a possible blend of options 1 and 2
could be our best way forward as a community.
City Council to allow a case by case exception for establishments who do not meet the 50%
criteria but DO meet additional conditions possibly including the following that can be
determined by a committee.
a.) alcohol compliance
b.) additional safety/staffing/service measures
c.) service cut-off times
d.) fencing/barrier requirements
e.) City Manager has right to revoke exception due to non-compliance
In addition, I would appreciate the opportunity to serve on a committee that will look at ways to
aid the city government in allowing patrons to experience our wonderful Ames areas out in front
of businesses!
Kind regards,
Bethany DeVries
