Dear Ames City Council,
I writing you in regards to Item #16 on tonight's agenda regarding NOT
approving 3333 Stange Rd for only the church and the retirement village.
I can understand it is hard to legislate land use, however, is this really
different than when someone comes before the council with another request that
is not in the best interest of Ames? It just saddens me to think of the lost
property tax dollars and the good use for Ames that those dollars could have
accomplished.
I think when we talk of affordable Ames housing, here is a perfect chance.
Have this land be zoned for single family housing and more families can move
up and make affordable housing available in Ames. We love living in north Ames
as we have for the past 28 years.
I wonder if a new business were to think about locating here to Ames, the
shortage of available housing could send them to another town. I'm currently
working with a company to locate here in central Iowa and I 'm having a hard
time pushing for Ames and so they will probably settle in another central Iowa
town, too bad for Ames. It will be a R&D biomass business starting with 20+
very good paying jobs and possibly 40-50 jobs within a year.
Thank you again for serving Ames as you do.

Subject: City Council Meeting- Item #16
Dear Ames City Council,
I writing you in regards to Item #16 on tonight's agenda regarding NOT
approving 3333 Stange Rd for only the church and the retirement village.
I was talking to an Ames Realtor recently about where in north Ames I could
ever buy a lot to build a new home and still be in the Ames School district
and his reply was that probably wouldn't happen. I live near Meeker
Elementary in a house that could easily be sold to a family as an affordable
first home. I have a grandson who will be going to Ames School in a few years
and my wife said why should we pay property taxes to Gilbert schools, since
that is the only place left to buy a lot in north Ames and our grandson and
other kids won't get the benefit of our property tax dollars.
So because of this, we will just remodel our current home and stay where we
are, which is sad that a younger family could have bought our home and we
could move up to a larger new home and we would be paying higher property
taxes on a new home.
I would never want to limit a person or a church from their plans, however, in
this case I just don't get it. Are they mad at Ames developers or the Ames
Schools? This tract of land could be divided up into many very nice single
family home lots with the property taxes going to the Ames Schools. Haven't
we in Ames been punished enough for the past mistakes of whoever set the
school boundaries between Ames and Gilbert? Also, haven't we given Gilbert
enough property tax dollars? Let the retirement village go back to the Athens
property where they originally wanted to build and also have the church
relocate through a land transfer into the Gilbert school district and let the
last large tract of build able lots in the Ames School district be single
family homes-- I wonder how much property tax dollars will vaporize from Ames
since the church won't be paying any property tax dollars on that land of
theirs if you pass this?
I repeat-- I just don't get it.
Thank you for listening,
Denny Howell
