COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: NEW PARKING REGULATIONS FOR SUNSET RIDGE, 4T" ADDITION
BACKGROUND:
In response to filing of the Final Plats for the Sunset Ridge Subdivision 4th Addition and
the Northridge Heights Subdivision 10th Addition, parking regulations are required for
the addition of the following new streets: Springbrook Drive and Wilder Avenue in
Sunset Ridge 4th, and Roxboro Drive and Ballentine Drive in Northridge Heights 10th
The adjacent land use for all of these roads is residential. The City of Ames allows
construction of narrower residential streets to minimize impacts related to infrastructure
while maintaining access for emergency vehicles. Therefore, there is a need to restrict
parking on one side of the street. This is typically done on the side of the street in which
the water main is located to allow continuous access to fire hydrants.
ALTERNATIVES:
1 . Direct the City Attorney to draft an ordinance to prohibit parking:
a. At all times of the day on the north side of Springbrook Drive
b. At all times of the day on the east side of Wilder Avenue.
c. At all times of the day on the north side of Roxboro Drive
d. At all times of the day on the north side of Ballentine Drive
2. Do not initiate these parking restrictions.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Restriction of parking along the designated streets is appropriate in order to provide
unrestricted emergency vehicle access to these new residential areas.
Therefore, it is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt
Alternative No. 1, thereby directing the City Attorney to draft an ordinance prohibiting
parking as indicated above.
