Box 811 CanngPeo Ames, IA 50010 Quality Program Phone: 515-239-5146 • Fax: 515-239-5142 Exceptional SeM November 17, 2009 Mayor Ann Campbell and Members of the Ames City Council Re: Amendment to Ames Municipal Code Section 26.39 Speed, to set a speed limit on South Dayton Place Dear Mayor and Members of the City Council: As you are aware, part of South Dayton Avenue was recently rerouted to a new location. The new part commences approximately 1500 feet south of South Fifth Street and runs diagonally southwest to intersect with South Sixteenth Street directly north of the Highway 30 bridge overpass. The segment of South Dayton Avenue which goes south from the point where the diagonal commences has been renamed South Dayton Place. This street relocation and name change unintentionally impacted the speed designation on South Dayton Place. When that roadway was part of Dayton Avenue, its speed limit was set pursuant to Ames Municipal Code Section 26.39(l)(y) at 45 miles per hour. Under the current speed limit ordinances, the established speed limits for both old and relocated Dayton Avenue are still in effect. However, there is presently no established speed limit for South Dayton Place. Since that area contains a mix of residential and commercial properties, as well as undeveloped land, it would be appropriate to have the designated speed limit there re-established by ordinance at 45 miles per hour. The attached proposed ordinance will re-establish the speed limit for South Dayton Place to what it had been prior to its renaming. Your favorable consideration of this ordinance is requested. Sincerely, f `1 Judy K. Parks Assistant City Attorney
