COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: PARKING REGULATIONS FOR HAMPTON STREET
BACKGROUND:
On December 5, 2006, a resident of Somerset Subdivision contacted staff about the parking
regulations on Hampton Street. Currently, there are no parking regulations established for
Hampton Street. The resident's concern was regarding the snow removal for this street when
parking is allowed on both sides, and that this might cause a hazardous situation when snow
accumulates around parked vehicles.
Hampton Street is 26 feet wide, and in order to maintain a drive isle wide enough for
emergency services, parking is only recommended on one side of the street. Current policy
is to restrict parking on the side of the street where fire hydrants are located, thereby
providing uninterrupted access to the fire hydrants for fire protection.
Therefore, staff recommends that parking regulations be established along the south side of
Hampton Street from its intersection with Bradford Drive, east, to its intersection with Eaton
Avenue. This regulatory action would establish consistency along Hampton Street in respect
to the surrounding streets.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to draft an ordinance restricting parking along the south side of
Hampton Street.
2. Reject the proposed parking regulations.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Establishing parking regulations on Hampton Street would enhance the ability of Emergency
Services and Public Works crews to properly service this area. It would also establish
consistency with other parking regulations in this portion of Somerset Subdivision.
Therefore, it is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt
Alternative No. 1, thereby directing the City Attorney to draft an ordinance to restrict parking
along the south side of Hampton Street.
