City Hall CITY CLE-RK
Ames, IA 50010 =__ CITY OF AMES,IOWA
Dear Mayor Tedesco and City Council Members:
Attached is a petition signed by many neighbors that live along Duff Avenue,Northwood Drive,
Kellogg Avenue, and Thompson Circle. We are very concerned about the deer that inhabit our
neighborhood. A house on Kellogg that has been vacant for 3 years with a yard that resembles
untouched woodlands has aggravated the situation. The unkempt yard has been the birthing site
for deer, home to deer mice, raccoons, crows, rabbits, and even a pheasant. A red fox has helped
with the rabbit population and for this we are grateful.
As you will notice, the petition says that there was one case of Lyme Disease diagnosed since
this situation began. In the process of getting the neighbors to sign the petition, another neighbor
told us that she contracted Lyme working in her garden. We feel the issue of our chewed plant
material is minor compared to the public health issue this disease entails. We worry about the
children in our area as well as those that play soccer at Inis Grove Park and of course use the
playground equipment.
We would appreciate meeting with you or staff to come to some resolution of the situation we
face all year. We are just one area in Ames that has a"deer"problem. We would be happy to
be the first to help remedy this situation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Q
Debbie Gitchell +J

DEER PETITION NORTHWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD
We the undersigned live in a neighborhood bordered by Duff Avenue, 241h street Kellogg ,
Thompson Dr and intersected by Northwood Dr. For the past 3 years we have had White Tail
Deer inhabiting our yards during all four seasons. We have faced almost daily presence of these
animals. There have been 3 annual births numbering single and double fawns for the past 3
springs in a vacant yard in our midst. They have eaten our gardens and shrubs resulting in
uncalculated amount of destruction; left their feces everywhere; and even are attributed to one of
us having contracted Lyme disease working in her back yard. We fear that with the herd of 50
deer living in Inis Grove Park across Duff Avenue will cause auto accidents as the deer cross
Duff to inhabit our yards.
We have contacted the city and asked for some assistance in ending this difficult situation. But
we have not received any satisfactory help dealing with the deer. We would like the City
Council to help us alleviate the presence of deer in our neighborhood. If things continue as they
are, we see this situation only getting worse and a public health issue for us and our children.
