TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Jeffrey Benson, AICP, ASLA, Planner
DATE: February 8, 2006
SUBJECT: Council Referral of January 10, 2006 on Retrofit Sprinkler Ordinance
The City Council directed staff to investigate the possibility of tax abatement in the University Impacted
Area, specifically, Greek houses, by the Council's February 28 meeting.
Staff has concluded that the eligibility criteria as proposed for the East University Impacted Urban
Revitalization Area would include improvements to retrofit existing Greek houses with fire sprinkler
systems. (See Council Action Form for the proposed East University Impacted Urban Revitalization
Area on the February 14 Council meeting agenda.)
However, this proposed Urban Revitalization Area would not cover all of the properties to which the
proposed sprinkler retrofit ordinance would apply. Several of these properties, including some Greek
houses, are located outside this East University Impacted Urban Revitalization Area. On February 28,
staff will report on several alternative approaches for providing tax abatement for sprinkler retrofit
improvements for these properties.
