HomeMy WebLinkAboutA011 - Letter from YSS Board of Directors requesting financial assistance City of Ames
Proposed Retrofit Sprinkler Ordinance
Youth and Shelter Services, Inc. (YSS) again requests and urges the Ames City Council
to consider making funding available to assist in the installation of sprinkler systems for
non-profits, especially for those group homes which must comply with the proposed
ordinance.
The licensed capacity at YSS's Youth Recovery House is 25, however, due to funding
cuts we are currently staffed for only 15 residents. Today we are treating 15 recovering
male adolescents. It is anticipated that in the near future we will again serve residents at
our licensed capacity of 25. While we support all measures that serve to increase the
safety of our recovering teenage clients, the installation of a sprinkler system would be
cost prohibitive. ASSET funding, state funding, and fees for services will not cover these
one-time, capital expenditures.
We urge that the Ames City Council not include mandatory compliance for non-profits
without consideration of financial assistance that will be required for non-profits to
comply with the proposed ordinance.qa,j,l _
