COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: SPEED LIMIT ON ONTARIO STREET BETWEEN NEBRASKA AVENUE
AND CALIFORNIA AVENUE.
BACKGROUND:
Public concern has been expressed regarding the current 45 mph speed limit along
Ontario Street from Nebraska Avenue west to County Line Road. With further
development of the residential area north of Ontario Street, the speed limit should be
reduced to 35 mph until vehicles are west of California Avenue. This reduction would
create a congruous speed limit similar to other minor arterials throughout the City.
The Engineering Division researched the existing speed regulations and conducted field
observations. It has been determined that a speed limit reduction in that area will
provide increased safety for residents by reducing the stopping distance required by
motorists.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to draft an amendment to the ordinance so that the speed
limit along Ontario Street remains 35 mph until west of California Avenue and then
45 mph from California Avenue to the West Corporate Limits.
2. Allow the speed limit to remain unchanged on Ontario Street.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative No.
1, thereby directing the City Attorney to draft an amendment to the ordinance so that the
speed limit along Ontario Street remains 35 mph until west of California Avenue and
then 45 mph from California Avenue to the West Corporate Limits.
