HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated November 22, 2005 ITEM# DATE November 22, 2005 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: UPDATE THE LOCAL ORDINANCE TO THE 2005 NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE (NEC) BACKGROUND: In the spirit of keeping abreast of the nationally accepted building codes, the Electrical Board of Appeals has reviewed the 2005 NEC and proposes to adopt it along with the existing local amendments. All licensed electricians were recently invited to an Electrical Board of Appeals meeting to discuss the issue, and there were no objections to the proposal. Ames has historically adopted the most recent NEC one year after it has been published in order to allow the contractors time to get accustomed to any changes in the Code. All licensed electricians will be required to submit proof of attendance of an eight-hour Code update class when they renew their electrical licenses before December 31, 2005. Many contractors are already applying the 2005 NEC in their daily work because of its requirement in other jurisdictions where they work. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . The City Council can adopt an ordinance enacting the 2005 National Electric Code with local amendments. 2. The City Council can reject the ordinance. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative #1, thereby adopting an ordinance enacting the 2005 National Electric Code, with local amendments.
