Private citizens and school district officials have asked for traffic studies to be conducted along this roadway. Their concern was excessive traffic speeds in the current 40 mph zone that may pose a safety risk to middle school students. Upon their request, the Engineering Division researched current speed regulations and conducted field studies. It has been determined that reduction of the speed limit in the area may provide an increase in safety for students by reducing the stopping distance required by motorists. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Direct the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph from a point 2000 feet west of the west line of State Avenue to the east line of South Dakota Avenue. 2. Allow the speed limit to remain unchanged on Mortensen Road. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative No. 1, thereby directing the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph from a point 2000 feet west of the west line of State Avenue to the east line of South Dakota Avenue. 1 xNJ P' 1' Ill ,", v4; 1.6 +J _ 9 a e a x ;t \ st a 14, TWO JL IT V ( ,e -f F to 1 :x d c40 4.0 saw V 3
