We live in the Hillside subdivision and I have noticed that the apartment complexes in that area (off of Mortensen) do not have stop signs that force vehicles to stop before venturing out into the street. It is a particular problem with Sterling University residents because the residents hardly look at the street before swinging into traffic. This problem will increase exponentially as the construction of all of those apartment buildings and other commercial buildings along Mortensen are completed and the new middle school is open. The amount of traffic will also increase as the middle schoolers are walking and riding their bikes to school and parents are dropping off their children. Our oldest, Taylor, will be going to middle school next year and will very likely be riding his bike to school on occasion, so safety is of particular concern to me. I would propose: * Require all commercial property owners (especially apartment buildings) to install stop signs at all driveways that egress to a road. * A reduction in the speed limit in the area surrounding the new middle school. * Frequent monitoring by the Ames Police Department to ensure that vehicles are actually stopping at these stop signs and slowing down- especially in the beginning of the school year. * A continuous bikepath (preferred for east of S. Dakota) or sidewalk from Miller Avenue down Mortensen Drive (on the north side of the road) to the middle school. For those lots that have not been sold, have the work completed and add it to the initial cost of the lot. * Pattern a cross-walk on South Dakota. There is a cross-walk signal at Mortensen and South Dakota, but there is no cross-walk patterned on the street. Will there be a crossing guard at that intersection? Perhaps some or all of these suggestions are already in the works or perhaps they need to be taken directly to Steve Schainker's office. Would you let me know? I don't know what the master bike plan is or what kind of precedence there is for these ideas. However, since we will have a middle school on Mortensen Road, if the master plan does not indicate a bike path http://webmail.isunet.net/src/read body.php?mailbox=INBOX&passed id=18602&startM... 5/11/2005 SquirrelMail Page 2 of 2 along that route, we certainly need one now. I know that the Research Park was required to install a bike path along Airport Road and we have also voluntarily installed stop signs in all of our driveways. Simply put- we need to adopt some measures to keep our children safe. Thanks for your time.
