COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: REVISION OF PARKING REGULATIONS ON HAYES AVENUE
BACKGROUND:
Staff received a petition from residents in the 2100 block of Hayes Avenue requesting
that "No Parking 7:30 to 9:30 AM On School Days" parking signs be removed on Hayes
Avenue. The Allenview Neighborhood Association understands that these signs were
installed to prohibit high school students from parking on the street. The Association
states that since that time, the high school has enlarged its parking lot and the City of
Ames has provided more parking on Ridgewood Avenue. Therefore, the Association
does not believe that the "No Parking 7:30 to 9:30 AM on School Days" signs are
necessary at this time.
There are 27 property owners on Hayes Avenue that would be directly impacted if
parking were allowed. Twenty-two signatures supported the petition. Four residents
opposed the petition and the Association was not able to contact one resident.
It appears that about 85% of the residents support this action. Therefore, staff
recommends rescinding the existing parking regulations.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to rescind the "No Parking 7:30
to 9:30 AM on School Days" parking restrictions on Hayes Avenue.
2. Do not change parking restrictions on Hayes Avenue.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative No.
1, thereby directing the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to rescind the "No Parking
7:30 to 9:30 AM on School Days" parking restrictions on Hayes Avenue.
