AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF AMES,
IOWA,BY REPEALING SECTION 14.2(1)THEREOF AND READOPTING THAT
SUBSECTION REVISED FOR THE PURPOSE OF SETTING THE TERM FOR ONE
MEMBER OF THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION AS ONE YEAR WITH
A ONE YEAR REAPPOINTMENT OPTION; REPEALING ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT TO THE EXTENT OF CONFLICT; AND ESTABLISHING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED,by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames,Iowa shall be hereby amended by repealing
Subsection 14.3(1)thereof and readopting the same to state as follows:
"(1)Commission Appointed. The Ames Human Relations Commission shall consist of seven
(7) members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council.
Appointments shall take into consideration the various racial,religious,cultural and social
groups and geographical areas within the City of Ames in so far as may be practicable. The
term of appointment shall be three(3)years for six of the members,and one year,with only
one year reappointment allowed,for one of the members. All terms shall run from April 1 of
the year in which the appointment is made except that for the purpose of maintaining an
appropriate staggering of terms,the Mayor may prescribe a shorter term for any appointment
or reappointment. In the event that a vacancy occurs in the membership of the Commission
by death,resignation or otherwise prior to the normal expiration of the appointee's term,the
Mayor, with the approval of the City Council, shall appoint a person to serve out the
remainder of the unexpired term. Any member or all members of the Commission may be re-
moved from office at any time by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council,for good
cause. No person shall serve on the Commission for more than six (6) years. The
Commission shall elect one of their members to be chairperson,and develop their own rules
of procedure, not inconsistent with this chapter. The one year term shall be applied to a
position first becoming vacant after the date of this resolution.
Section Two. All ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.
Section Three. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication
as required by law.
