COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: PARKING REGULATIONS IN MUNICIPAL PARKING LOT MM
BACKGROUND:
The new parking lot immediately east of Grand Avenue bounded on the north by 520
Grand Avenue and on the south by Fifth Street is nearing completion. Therefore, it is
appropriate that it be officially designated. The existing lot immediately west of the
Ames City Hall Building bounded by 6th Street on the north and Fifth Street on the south
is designated Lot M. Therefore, staff suggests that the new lot be designated Lot MM.
It is important to designate the new lot as a separate lot to simplify parking ordinances.
Staff also suggests that parking be prohibited in Lot MM from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
This will facilitate snow plowing and street sweeping that occurs early in the morning
when parking volumes are at their lowest. This parking prohibition will also prevent
vehicle storage. The lot will be open to public parking. No other restrictions are
recommended at this time. At such time as the Veterans Memorial is developed,
designation of a limited number of short-term (30 minute±) spaces will be considered.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance designating the new parking lot
immediately east of Grand Avenue bounded on the north by 520 Grand Avenue and on
the south by Fifth Street as Municipal Parking Lot MM in the east parking district and
prohibit parking from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
2. Reject this ordinance.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council accept alternative number
one, above and direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance designating the new
parking lot immediately east of Grand Avenue bounded on the north by 520 Grand
Avenue and on the south by Fifth Street as Municipal Parking Lot MM in the east
parking district and prohibit parking from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
