HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated October 12, 2004 Item # Date: October 12, 2004 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: DESIGNATION OF STANGE ROAD AS A THROUGH STREET BACKGROUND: Recently, roadway-widening improvements on Stange Road resulting from further construction of the Somerset Subdivision and the beginning of construction on the Taylor Glen Subdivision were completed. It was noted that stop signs were needed on Clayton Drive, Kingston Drive and Yorkshire Street at their intersections with Stange Road. A review of the Municipal Code noted that Stange Road had not previously been designated as a through street. This roadway is designated in the City of Ames Street Classification Plan as an arterial route and plans are to extend it further north beyond Bloomington Road. The roadway is a four-lane facility from the Iowa State University campus north to Aspen Road in Somerset Subdivision. As construction in the area continues, It will be widened to four lanes from Aspen Road north to Bloomington Road. Therefore, it seems appropriate to designate Stange Road as a through street from the Iowa State University campus northward. This will allow for side street stop control to be installed as further streets are constructed intersecting the roadway. Without the through street designation, separate traffic control designations for all new side street stops on Stange Road would need to be prepared and submitted to the City Manager for approval. Passage of this ordinance would require that all Traffic Control Authorizations for side street stops currently in force on Stange Road be rescinded. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance to designate Stange Road as a through street. 2 Reject this ordinance. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council accept alternative number one, above and direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance to designate Stange Road as a through street.
