COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: REVISION OF PARKING REGULATIONS ON STANGE ROAD AND
NORTHRIDGE PARKWAY
BACKGROUND:
John Fenn of HCS Builders requested that City of Ames staff consider no parking
regulations on Northridge Parkway between Stange Road and Kent Avenue to prevent
overnight parking. Staff determined that it would be appropriate to consider similar
regulations on Stange Road between Aspen Road and Bristol Drive as well. Staff
surveyed the area businesses and determined that it would be appropriate to allow
parking overnight on Stange Road in front of the apartment buildings that did not have
businesses on the first floor.
Staff suggested that the time limit for no parking be established from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00
a.m. This would be consistent with similar regulations downtown and in campustown.
This allows parking after local establishments close, and allows customers and
employees of the businesses time to get to their parked cars. It also provides for snow
plowing and street sweeping during early morning hours when parking volumes are at
their lowest. Furthermore, this revision prevents vehicle storage. All other restrictions,
such as no parking during snow emergency declarations, will remain in place.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting parking from 3:00
a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on both sides of Northridge Parkway from Stange Road to Kent
Avenue; and on the east side of Stange Road from a point 330 feet north of Northridge
Parkway to a point 360 feet south of Northridge Parkway.
2 Reject this ordinance.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council accept alternative number
one, above and direct the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting parking from
3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on both sides of Northridge Parkway from Stange Road to Kent
Avenue; and on the east side of Stange Road from a point 330 feet north of Northridge
Parkway to a point 360 feet south of Northridge Parkway.
