HomeMy WebLinkAboutA001 - Council Action Form dated June 8, 2004 © Vp 3g Item # Date: June 8, 2004 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: PARKING REGULATIONS ON WELBECK DRIVE AND WESTLAWN DRIVE. BACKGROUND: This is in response to the filing of Bloomington Heights West Plat 2. The streets in this addition have been constructed and No Parking signs need to be installed as soon as practical for the information of prospective homeowners in the neighborhood. The City is currently building narrower streets in an effort to calm traffic. However, this requires "No Parking" signs on one side of the street in an effort to make sure the Fire Department has enough room to adequately set up equipment. It is the practice of the Public Works Department to establish parking restrictions on one side of the street where the street width is twenty-six feet. Given that parking is prohibited near fire hydrants, the Department usually prohibits parking on the side of the street that the fire hydrants are located. This policy not only provides the maximum amount of on-street parking, but the practice also increases the probability that the Fire Department can access the fire hydrant if necessary in an emergency. Currently parking is prohibited on the north side of Welbeck Drive and on the east side of Westlawn Drive. Welbeck Drive runs westward from Hyde Avenue before curving to the north and intersecting Harrison Road. Note the attached map. Consequently, staff believes the no parking ordinance on the north side of Welbeck Drive should be revised to cover the north and east sides of the street. Similarly, Westlawn Drive runs northward from Welbeck Drive and intersects Harrison Road. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Direct the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to prohibit parking at all times on the north and east sides of Welbeck Drive and the east side of Westlawn Drive. 2. Reject this ordinance. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt alternative number one above and direct the City Attorney to develop an ordinance to prohibit parking at all times on the north and east sides of Welbeck Drive and the east side of Westlawn Drive.
