Dear Mayor Tedesco,
At Copyworks this summer we asking for a sign permit to replace a por
awning and go back to the awning we had before last summer. (see attachment) This
return to our old awning lettering size and color is requested because we feel that our
current/new awning has impacted economically in a negative way.
It has been brought to my attention by Ed Jolot with the city's inspections office that
there is a city code (municipal code 5.228) that prohibits the size of the lettering on our
sign to not be any greater than 12" tall.
We replaced our awning last year (see attachment) and had a permit granted by the
inspections department. Ed has told me that the awning we installed last year was
approved but that the inspections department had missed the 12" lettering limitations in
the code at that time.
Municipal code 5.228 has been in place since 1992. Copyworks originally had this
awning installed in 1995 so this code has been waived or overlooked more than once
after the municipal code was originally written.
We ask that city council or city staff consider a change in the municipal code 5.228 to
allow a business to maintain lettering sizes greater than the 12" minimum of existing
signs, without causing additional cost to the business. This would also give a business the
opportunity to replace signage that was damaged due to storms or vandalism.
Attached you will find copies of our current awning and our requested awning change
drawings.
I would be open to meeting with city staff or present at city council our request if needed.
Please contact me at your earliest c venience about this matter.
an ou,
John Crawford
