AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF THE CITY OF
AMES,IOWA,BY ENACTING NEW SECTIONS 19.15,19.16,19.17,19.18,
19.19,19.20 AND 19.21 FOR THE PURPOSE OF REGULATING FISHING
AND OTHER ACTIVITIES PERTAINING TO THE LAKE AT ADA
HAYDEN HERITAGE PARK;REPEALING ANY AND ALL ORDINANCES
OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT TO THE EXTENT OF SUCH
CONFLICT; PROVIDING A PENALTY; AND ESTABLISHING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ENACTED,by the City Council for the City of Ames,Iowa,that:
Section One. The Municipal Code of the City of Ames, Iowa shall be and the same is hereby amended by
adding new sections as follows:
"Sec. 19.15. RELEASE OF BASS REQUIRED.
Any person who takes,by any means,from the lake at Ada Hayden Heritage Park,any fish
of the kind that is commonly called"Black Bass",including those fish of the kind that are commonly
called"Largemouth Bass","Smallmouth Bass"and"Spotted Bass",shall handle such fish with wet
hands only and shall immediately release such fish back into the said lake, while the fish is under
water,with care to cause as little injury as possible to the fish.
Sec.19.16. CRAPPIE,BLUEGILL/SUNFISH LIMITS.
a) No person shall take from the lake at Ada Hayden Heritage Park,on a single day,
more than five fish of the kind that is commonly called"Crappie".
b) No person shall take from the lake at Ada Hayden Heritage Park,on a single day,
more than ten fish of the kind called`Bluegill",or more than ten fish of the kind called"Sunfish",or
take a combination of such fish in a quantity greater than ten.
Sec. 19.17. SPAWNING AREAS.
The Director of Parks and Recreation shall cause certain portions of the lake at Ada Hayden
Heritage Park to be designated as,and conspicuously marked as,fish spawning areas. No person shall
fish, either from the shore or from any point on or in the lake water, in any such designated fish
spawning area during the period of May 1 through June 30.
Sec.19.18. BAIT DUMPING PROHIBITED.
No person shall dump live fish bait into the water of the lake at Ada Hayden Heritage Park.
Sec.19.19. BOAT MOTORS.
Use of any boat motor other than an electric motor, is prohibited at Ada Hayden Heritage
Park. No person shall have any boat motor fueled by gasoline on the premises of that park.
Sec. 19.20. FISHING FROM THE BRIDGE PROHIBITED.
No person shall engage in fishing from the bridge at Ada Hayden Heritage Park.
See. 19.21. PENALTIES.
a) Violation of sections 19.8 through 19.20 shall be a municipal infraction punishable
by a penalty of$30 for a first violation; $100 for the first repeat violation; and, $200 for each and
every subsequent repeat violation.
b) Alternatively,violations of sections 19.15 through 19.20 can be charged by a peace
officer as a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than$500,or by imprisonment for
a period not to exceed thirty days."
Section Two. Violation of the provisions of this ordinance shall be punishable as herein provided.
Section Three. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of
such conflict, if any.
Section Four. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as
required by law.
