HomeMy WebLinkAboutA003 - Council Action Form dated October 28, 2003 ITEM # 0 1 DATE 10/28/03 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: REZONING OF PROPERTY LOCATED AT 623 9T" STREET FROM GOVERNMENT/AIRPORT (S-GA) TO RESIDENTIAL MEDIUM DENSITY (RM). BACKGROUND: The subject parcel, located at 623 9th Street, is currently zoned Government/Airport because it was once owned by the City of Ames. The City of Ames has since sold this property. In order for the property to be used as a residential structure, it must be rezoned to Residential Medium Density. All adjacent properties are zoned Residential Medium Density. The property is currently being redeveloped from a City-owned day care facility to a single-family home. The property owner has demolished the dilapidated day care and is constructing a single-family home in its place. Residential Medium Density zoning is recommended because it will bring the improvements into zoning conformance, is consistent with the adjacent zoning, and promotes more of the same mixture of multi-family and single-family land uses that exist in the surrounding neighborhood. Land Use Policy Plan (LUPP) Goals and Policies. Rezoning the subject area to Residential Medium Density is consistent with the Land Use Policy Plan and Future Land Use Map. The redevelopment of the property supports the Plan's goals and objectives for mixed and affordable housing, compatible land uses, and infill. RECOMMENDATION OF THE PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION: The Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval of this rezoning request at their meeting of October 15, 2003. ALTERNATIVES: 1. The City Council can approve the rezoning of the property located at 623 9th Street from Government/Airport (S-GA) to Residential Medium Density (RM). 2. The City Council can deny the rezoning of property located at 623 9th Street from Government/Airport (S-GA) to Residential Medium Density (RM). 3. Action on this request can be postponed and referred back to City staff and/or the applicant for additional information. CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended that Alternative#1 be approved.Alternative#1 is a recommendation to rezone the subject area to RM, and bring the improvements currently being made to the property into zoning conformance.
