HomeMy WebLinkAboutA002 - Council Action Form dated June 24, 2003 r ITEM # ` DATE June 24, 2003 COUNCIL ACTION FORM SUBJECT: AUTHORIZE INCREASE IN ILLEGAL PARKING FINES - $5.00 to $10.00 BACKGROUND: For the first time in thirty years state lawmakers lifted the cap on parking fines. The City of Ames has for many years experienced parking problems around the community. This problem has been magnified during large crowd events at Jack Trice Stadium where, in many cases, it is cheaper to park illegally and receive a $5 illegal parking fine than to pay for parking on University grounds. Iowa State University, not bound by the previous $5 state fine limit, has set illegal parking at $12. This difference in illegal fines has caused many to park in residential areas of Campustown to avoid the higher Iowa State University parking violations. It is proposed that the City increase illegal parking from $5 to $10 and $15 if paid after thirty (30) days. It is proposed that City parking meter violations remain at the $3 amount. ALTERNATIVES: 1 . Approve the attached ordinance increasing illegal parking fines from $5 to $10 and $15 if paid after thirty (30) days. 2. Make no change in the parking fine schedule. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council approve alternative number one authorizing approval of the attached ordinance increasing illegal parking fines from $5 to $10 and $15 if paid after thirty (30) days.
